Limnology studies at Porto Trombetas region, state of Pará, Amazon

This program comprises three distinct research and monitoring projects undertaken at a) lake Batata; b) igarapé (small stream) Água Fria and a portion of the Trombetas river; and c) igarapés at the National Forest of Saracá-Taquera. The main goal is to produce basic and applied research to describe and monitor impact, in these aquatic environments, due to mining activities of the company Mineração Rio do Norte. The studies provide recommendations both to prevent impacts and on how to intervene in actions that restore degraded ecosystems. These various activities are carried out in partnership with other research groups, such as the Aquatic Ecology Lab at the Federal University of Juiz de Fora, and the Fish Ecology Lab and the Plant Ecology Lab at UFRJ. In over 30 years, this program has trained dozens of professionals, and produced hundreds of scientific papers, as well as Masters and Doctoral theses.
