These studies target coastal lagoons, rivers and streams, and permanent and temporary wetlands in the northern region of the state of Rio de Janeiro. They focus on biological communities and their interactions with the organic carbon originated from the neighbouring terrestrial ecosystems. Moreover, this project also examines the role of anthropogenic impacts - such as the artificial eutrophication due to sewage discharge, and the opening of the sand bars of the lagoons – and of natural variations such as those related to salinity.
