I was born in September 4th, 1950, in the municipality of Cascavel (CE) and migrated to Rio de Janeiro in 1959. I took my B.Sc. in Biology at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1973), and in the same year I started a Ph.D. program at the Christian Albrecht Universitaet, Kiel and Max-Planck-Institut fuer Limnologie, Plön (Alemanha), under the supervision of Prof. Harald Sioli. I returned to Brazil in October 1978 by invitation of the Prof. José Galizia Tundisi, to join the Federal University of São Carlos (SP) as an Adjunct Professor.
My scientific output consists of more than two hundred scientific papers published in Brazil and abroad, and several books, including “Fundamentos de Limnologia” (Foundations of Limnology), which is a pioneer manual in the Portuguese language that remains important for training aquatic ecologists in Brazil and Latin America. My academic activities converges with the recent history of Brazilian Limnology, since I was one of the founding members of the Brazilian Society of Limnology (currently named Brazilian Association for Limnology) in 1982, where I acted as President and have also created the journal Acta Limnologica Brasiliensia.
One of my most relevant contributions was the creation of the NUPEM Institute/UFRJ, which became of the main centers for research and graduate training outside the metropolitan area of the State of Rio de Janeiro. It was the “embryo” of the Campus of UFRJ in the municipality of Macaé. In parallel, during the mid-1990s, I led the movement that resulted in the creation of the Restinga de Jurubatiba National Park (RJ), the only Brazilia National Park protecting resting ecosystem in Brazil.
I have trained many masters and doctors in Ecology, who now work in the private sector, academy, NGOs and government all across Brazil.
