I have a B.Sc. in Forestry (Universidade de Brasília; 1986), and Ph.D. in Ecology (University of St. Andrews, Scotland, 1992). I am Associate Professor at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ, since 1993), a member of the Linnean Society of London (since 1995), and I have also been a Visiting Professor at the University of Minnesota (EUA, 2003) and the Technological University of Darmstadt (Germany, 2004). I have also acted in various roles outside academia: Coordinator for the Area of Ecology and Environment at the Graduate Agency of the Ministry of Education (CAPES/MEC; 2005-2011), Science Director of the Botanical Gardens of Rio de Janeiro (2007-2009), Executive Director for the Brazil Program (2009-2011) and Senior Vice-President for the Americas of the NGO Conservation International (2011-2015), and Executive Director for the Brazilian Foundation for Sustainable Development (FBDS; 2015-2018). I acted as lead author on the first assessment report of the Brazilian Panel on Climate Change (PBMC; 2011-2014), on the fifth assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC; 2011-2014), as coordinating lead author on the Science-Policy Platform of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES; 2015-2018), and I have also been founder and coordinator of the Brazilian Platform of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (BPBES; 2015-2019). I have two Jabuti Literature Prizes in the category Natural Sciences, with the books "Biomas Brasileiros: Retratos de um País Plural" (2012) and "Mata Atlântica: Uma História do Futuro" (2014).
