Impact Assessment and Restoration of Aquatic Ecosystems

The lab is involved in research and practice that address ecological restoration in systems as diverse as coastal lagoons, riverine systems, and Amazonian lakes and floodplains. Tools include biomonitoring, natural engineering and spatial analysis.

The main activities in this context involve impact assessments, environmental monitoring, and restoration practice. The main goals include understanding and assessing the dimension of the ecological consequences of impact over water bodies, and effectively restoring selected areas. Our approach combines scientific and traditional knowledge to effectively restore and manage our target ecosystems.

This type of research and practice is inter- and transdisciplinary. It fosters a dialogue between concepts grounded in ecology, geomorphology, ethnobiology, education, among others; between actors, such as academics, government, business, organised civil society, and local communities; and between national and international academic partners.

One important by-product is the formation and training of practitioners and academic experts, both with high technical skills.
